Obituary for Virginia Knudson
Virginia L. Knudson, age 86, of Florence, SD, passed away February 12, 2020.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 17, 2020 at New Helgen Lutheran Church in Florence with Pastor Scott Demspter and Pastor Mindy Ehrke officiating.
Visitation will be from 2-5:00 p.m., Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Interment will be in the spring at Helgen Cemetery near Florence.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Taylor Knudson, Carrie Niles, Amy Baete, Anna Bisgard and Allison Bisgard; and her great-grandchildren, Everly Niles, Mallory Bisgard, Mila Baete, Maverick Baete and Maxxim Niles.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jake Bisgard, Josh Bisgard, Will Knudson, Adam Baete, Eric Niles; and her great-grandsons, Owen Niles, Soren Bisgard and Linken Niles.
Virginia Lee Ohnstad’s journey began on December 1, 1933 when she was born to Harold Bertum and Opal Pearl (Pierce) Ohnstad. She grew up in Codington County, rural Florence, South Dakota. Virg attended rural school through the eighth grade and graduated from Florence High School in 1952. She taught school at Mt. Pleasant #43, west of Florence, from 1952 to 1953. Then she met the apple of her eye. Harvey Knudson and Virginia were united in marriage June 21, 1953 at Goodhue Lutheran Church. She was a farm wife and mother working timelessly milking cows, hauling grain, gardening, haying, and raising their five children.
Virg was a lifelong Christian and a member of New Helgen Lutheran Church. She was active in Ladies Aid, Sunday school, and she truly loved baking and making soup for church events.
Virg also found time to take in and care for more than just her grandkids, including several neighbor’s children.
She loved square dancing, ballroom dancing and sewing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; two sons, Larry and Gary; one great-granddaughter, Calissa Niles; two brothers, Harold Jr. and Richard “Dick”; two sisters, Betty Rislov and Sandra Healey; and one son-in-law, Joel Bisgard.
Virginia is survived by her children, Terry (Renee) Knudson of Fargo, ND, Sally Bisgard of Waubay, SD, James (Cheryl) Knudson of Florence, SD; eight grandchildren, Jake (Anna) Bisgard, Carrie (Eric) Niles, Josh (Allison) Bisgard, Amy (Adam) Baete, Taylor Knudson, William Knudson, Danielle (Theo) Frank and Michael Knudson; ten great-grandchildren; and her sister, Shirley Schwinger of Watertown, SD.
